Staying safe down there (part 1)

Dealing with sexually transmitted infections.

Your thoughts (105) Staying safe down there (part 1)

Pregnancy is not the only result of unprotected sex. You also need to think about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). STIs can damage your body and make you really sick. And you might not even know you have one for years.

Common STIs that can infect you without showing signs right away include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes and HIV. Untreated, these infections can lead to severe pain in the genitals and infertility. You can pass it on to your sexual partner.

But if you do have sex, using a condom can save you a lifetime of regret. Condoms are free in all government clinics and hospitals.

Another important part of sexual health is being honest with your partner about both of your sexual histories and getting tested for STIs, including HIV, together.

If you think you might have been exposed to an STI, the good news is that with proper medical care, it doesn’t have to affect your life. The first step is to go to the clinic or a doctor. You’ll undergo some tests and get sent home with some medication. See, that wasn’t too hard was it?
