Your thoughts (4) Figuring out what to do after high-school

You can get a job you love even if you don’t want to go to university or aren’t able to study further.

Here’s how you can start working towards building your dream career:

Figure out what you love.

Make a list of the things you enjoy doing, then pick your top two. You can start developing skills for these things simply by learning from others, researching and practising.

For example, maybe you love writing – make contact with successful writers, ask to shadow them and write as much as you can.

Do your research.

Look up careers related to the things you enjoy. You can use the Internet, go to a library or ask around. When in you’re in town, walk around taking note of the businesses and activities related to your hobbies or skills.

Reach out.

Get your CV ready and start sending it out (or drop it off in person if you can) to companies or organisations you’re interested in being a part of. Include a cover letter explaining why you want to work there. You can ask about jobs, internships, apprenticeships or job shadowing. They may not pay at first but the skills you learn will be invaluable.

Do it on your own.

If you have a talent or service that people are willing to pay for, then start building your career immediately. From bloggers to bakers and poets, the world is full of people who turned their hobby, skill or talent into successful businesses

Don’t get discouraged.

Pursue your dream, no matter what. If your career choice requires a degree, and it’s not possible for you to go to university right now, it doesn’t mean that career is not within reach in the future. Many people start working in order to make money to fund their studies later in life.
