Reclaiming your life

...After you've been hurt.

Your thoughts (84) Reclaiming your life

We may be young but it doesn’t mean we don’t go through experiences that feel like they belong to adults. We also may have bad experiences, like being abused or attacked by the people we’re in relationships with, including people who are very close to us. Experiencing violence of any kind (verbal, emotional or sexual) is scary. Know that it’s never our fault when someone chooses to attack us in any way. It doesn’t matter what we are wearing, saying or doing. Say this with us: it’s never my fault if violence is committed against me.

Disturbing experiences can leave survivors lonely, sad or scared. This is why it’s so important to speak to someone you can trust when dealing with a violent situation. It can be a parent, aunt, sibling, cousin, a community leader, teacher, or your friend’s older sister.

It can also help to talk to a counsellor. You can call Childline SA. They will offer you counselling over the phone, in person and online. You don't need to give them your name, and you can contact them any time of the day or night. Contact them on 0800 055 555 if you’re scared, feel alone and if something is happening to you, or someone you know. They are here to help you!

Going through this is never easy, but with support, things will start getting better.
