Star power

Are you the next Nomzamo Mbatha?

Your thoughts (18) Star power

Lights, camera … action! You’re a star! You turn heads at the SAMAs, and wear five outfits at Durban July. You can make it girl. Every big star started out small. They found their talent and practiced to make it shine. First you need to build up your confidence. When your job comes with hearing “no” often, you really need to believe in yourself. Start where you are now. Look for a club in your area, ask theatres and art schools in your community or city if they have after school programmes.

Dream big, start small. Black Coffee started deejaying at community halls. Use every opportunity you get to perform: school shows, socials, volunteer to put on shows for church gatherings and so on! If you can, find a casting agency or a representative to help you look for jobs. Attend auditions, and keep trying even when things don’t go your way. Be out there, in other words.

Knock on as many doors as possible. Do you want to sing? Find out when the next auditions will be held for Idols, The Voice and SA’s Got Talent.

Aim for the stars but always put your safety first. ask an adult to help you look for opportunities and accompany you to auditions. If someone claims to be a casting agent, producer or manager, ask them for references. For example, if they say they are making a show for SABC, or shooting pictures for True Love, call the companies to find out if it’s true.

Shine like the star you are!
